    Butterfly and Climate Change

Once  K.D'Angelo said that "No garden truly blooms until butterflies have danced upon it".

Our Environment is home for many living and nonliving things. It is the environment that nurtures our life on the Earth. Environment consists of many species: birds, mammals, insects, amphibians, Aquatics and many other plant species. Nepal is the country which has unique geography with variation in Physiological and climatic conditions that has made Nepal rich in Biodiversity. According to the National Trust for Nature Conservation  Nepal's biodiversity profile records 208 mammals, 867 birds, 123 reptiles, 55 amphibians, 230 freshwater fish and 651 butterfly species and 3,958 moth species.

Our Environment has a large number of insects on which other organisms depend. Not only more in number but only providing many benefits to our existing environment. It is believed that eight of ten animals alive are insects or other Arthropods. We know of more than a million different species of insects, and are discovering new species all the time. Among those, Insect Butterfly is one of them.

Who won't get attracted toward the beautiful and magnificent color of butterflies?  Blinking of eyes even stops for a while when we observe the flying of butterflies around us. Butterflies are one of the beautiful creatures of nature which belong to the Lepidoptera family. According to the record there are 17,500 species of butterfly in the world and 651 species are found in Nepal. Butterflies are classified into six families for better understanding and also make it easy to study about thousands of butterflies in the world. Families are named as Hesperiidae, Nymphalidae, Riodinidae, Lycaenidae, Pieridae, Papilionidae. Butterflies depend on liquid matter and suck nectar from flowers. Butterflies have four life stages before the end of their life span, which depending on the type of butterfly can be a week or up to a year.

For proper maintenance of environment interaction all the creatures on it play an important role from tiny particles to large one. Question arises: why do butterflies matter?  Butterflies are an indicator of Climate change. Butterflies among them make earths look more beautiful and life more enjoyable to live on. They also help to support other forms of insects and wildlife. Butterflies are one of the signs of a healthy ecosystem and a healthy environment. Research can study habitat loss and fragmentation with the help of butterflies. Like bees, they are plant pollinators, and natural pest control.

Can we imagine our earth without those charming and alluring butterflies? Obviously not but Climate change is one of the burning issues of this century which is badly affecting many creatures including butterflies. So-called wise creatures on earth's i.e humans, are mainly responsible for climate change. Butterflies are cold blooded organisms and climate change affects their rate of development, physiology, behaviour, ecology and reproductive success. Climate change result in global warming and change in rainfall pattern which revelantly affect butterfly 's flight time and interaction with their food plants. Butterflies will respond to climate change differently depending on species, and even the same species may have a different response to climate change depending on the specific location where it is found. Furthermore due to climate change species are lacking adaptation, increased mortality and disturb the food web in the ecosystem.. Along with climate change, Insecticides in the field  also affect butterflies. Checkerspot  and monarch  butterfly which are more affected by climate change and habitat destruction

Not always climate change has a negative impact but also there are indications that some butterfly species are already adapting to climate change in a positive way. Such short-lived animals would be expected to adapt quickly and their success or otherwise is a good indicator of the effects such changes will have on other animals and plants

Being responsible for climate change is a human duty to contribute to the conservation of butterflies. Starting from Community level disseminating knowledge about the importance of butterflies and impact of climate change on them through awareness programmes should be done. Few research works are only performed on butterflies so to fill the gap more work should be conducted. If we want future generations, are to keep enjoying butterflies for years to come, we need more climate change-related studies, and we need to be aware of climate change effects on butterflies.
